Role and Responsibilities:
Assessments and Evaluations:
Conducts pre-participation screenings and various health and fitness assessments to determine an individual's current fitness level and identify any limitations or risks.
Exercise Prescription:
Develops individualized exercise programs based on an individual's needs, goals, and medical conditions, taking in to account, their limitations and potential risks.
Exercise Supervision and Monitoring:
Provides guidance and supervision during exercise sessions, ensuring safe and effective exercise practices, and monitoring physiological responses to exercise. Sport specific training for children, youth and adults.
Coaching and Counseling:
Provides education and counseling on healthy lifestyles, including physical activity, nutrition, and stress management, to promote long-term health and well-being.
Outcome Evaluation:
Evaluates the effectiveness of exercise programs and makes adjustments, as needed to optimize outcomes.
Collaboration:
Works as part of a healthcare team, collaborating with physicians, nurses, physio and occupational therapists, therapists and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.
Scope of Practice:
Conditions: Works with individuals with chronic diseases, functional limitations, or disabilities associated with musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, metabolic, neuromuscular, and aging conditions.
Populations: Serves a diverse range of populations, including those with chronic conditions, athletes, and special populations including children and youth.
Referrals: Accepts referrals from licensed healthcare professionals who are trained and licensed to diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions.
Professional Standards:
The practice and supervision of the CEP is guided by published professional guidelines, standards, and applicable state and federal laws and regulations. Evidence-informed practice is at the core of exercise prescription by CEPs.
Certification and Education:
CSEP-CEP:
The CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist™ (CSEP-CEP) certification is a recognized credential in the field of exercise science and personal training.
Requirements: Candidates must have a post-secondary education in exercise science or a related field and meet a required standard of knowledge.
Practical Experience: Candidates must provide documentation confirming that they have completed a co-op, work and/or volunteer experience in health-related fitness (healthy and chronic condition populations), and/or performance-related (work and/or sport) fitness.
Exam: Candidates must successfully complete the CSEP-CEP theory and practical exams.
Continuing Education: Certified professionals are expected to engage in ongoing professional development to maintain their knowledge and skills.
Additionally, Leslie has the CSEP High Performance Specialization, a Bachelor of Physical Education specializing in Athletic Therapy from the University of Alberta. And after a career in the fitness and sports industry returned to do a Master of Science in Pediatric Physiology at the University of British Columbia.
